The Scraping Bottom Productions Story
When an over-the-hill writer with a credit card, a cinematographer without a camera, a couple of kids too young to be taken seriously, and a group of Mexican filmmakers found each other wandering aimlessly through Los Angeles, California, only magic could result.
The team at Scraping Bottom Productions offers its own, unique voice to the world of independent filmmaking. We are a full-service, well-equipped production company, staffed with experienced creative and technical artists and committed to working in two distinct communication forms via digital video and multimedia.
The company serves all of Southern California with production facilities, editing labs, and sound studios in Burbank and Los Angeles. The company’s business office is headquartered in San Luis Obispo.
Independent short and feature filmmaking
Scraping Bottom Productions is committed to producing high quality, entertaining, innovative, and sometimes strange short and feature films. The company owns a library of original scripts and stories in-development. But, we are always looking for new ways to define and refine our storytelling through film.
To-date, Scraping Bottom Productions has produced six original short films. We have another short and a feature film in development, a web series in production, and other projects in the works!

Meet the Scraping Bottom Productions Team
 Andrew Zutta, Cinematographer, Editor - Andrew is a multi-talented technical and creative artist. He joined Scraping Bottom Productions in 2004 after being rejected for a part! Since then, we have discovered the breadth and depth of Andrew's talent behind the camera and in the editing suite. He is a 2004 graduate of Cal State Los Angeles with a degree in Television, Film, and Media Studies. When not working on a film, Andrew can be seen dancing at venues in and out of Southern California with various dance companies including Pasadena Civic Ballet, City Ballet of Los Angeles, and the Blue 13 dance company.

 Jaime Elizalde, Sound Designer, Sound Editor - Jaime has designed the sound and been sound director/editor on four of our films. Plus, he has composed music for two films as well as the SBP theme song which can be heard on our video logo (see Film Clips page). If that weren’t enough, Jaime, who graduated from university in Mexico City, is responsible for our long-time partnership with Univision Communications in Los Angeles. And, even though we (accidentally) lit him on fire and nearly electrocuted him (on the same shoot!), he has always been a top notch professional whose immense talent and great attitude are an asset on any set.

 Francisco Arellano, Production Manager - Know this about Francisco: there is no job he can’t handle on an independent film set. He has worked for SBP since day one as a 1st assistant director, gaffer, and key grip, among other jobs. Francisco has supported the sound department, camera operations, you name it. He is the kind of guy you always want around and he knows how to crack the whip! When he says a take is “good,” you know it’s good. And, he is the designer of the SBP logo! Francisco, whose vast experience includes current work as a television producer, studied Design at the Universidad Anahuac del Norte in Mexico City.

 The Web Czar, Webmaster - A Russian Jew who survived Stalin’s Great Purge of 1938, the Web Czar is not a man to be trifled with... ever. He seized control of the SBP Web site in 2007 after a bloodless coup and has wielded repressive rule over the domain ever since. He is the ultimate creative and technical dictator often dismissing ideas with an icy “nyet.” Working from an undisclosed location to avoid assassination, the Web Czar reports only to the Politburo in his own head.

 Myra Tompkins, Production Coordinator - Since 2005, Myra has worked behind the scenes coordinating numerous pre-production, production, and post-production activities at SBP. She holds an MBA from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo which gives her organizational and management skills that are sorely tested in the motion picture business. Actors around Los Angeles know her as that rare, kind and gentle voice personally delivering the bad news on casting decisions.

 Dayton Thane, Senior Production Assistant - Dayton is an irrepressible force who has yet to meet any immovable object (but don’t call him perky!). He received his degree in Film from San Diego State University in 2004 and has since worked behind the scenes for several companies in production offices and on set. Dayton joined up in 2007 and is thriving in the low pay/long hours environment carefully cultivated at Scraping Bottom Productions. Based in Burbank, his ambitions include writing, directing, and producing. We have no doubt he’ll be successful.

 Brian Johnson, Senior Production Assistant - Brian has been a Scraping Bottom veteran since the age of 13 when he appeared as a background player in Shanked. Since then, he has been helping with everything from development to casting to production to editing. Brian is also responsible for establishing the first Inmate Fan Club at a local high school. We can’t shake this kid, so we gave him a job! A veteran of the stage since age 10, Brian is now studying technical theater and art at a California State University. But, we predict he’ll be a fixture on SBP sets for years to come!

 M. J. Johnson, Producer, Writer, Boss - MJ wrote, produced, and directed his first stage play at the tender age of 15. Then, he took almost three decades off to regroup during which he graduated from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, made, lost, and made money while jetting through several careers. Returning to the arts in 1999 with just enough money to make trouble, MJ graduated from UCLA’s Professional Program in Screenwriting, studied production, and in 2004 founded Scraping Bottom Productions. He has written six feature scripts, directed, written and/or produced six short films, numerous television and radio commercials, and a regional PBS series.
